Argentina only suffered a bitter defeat in the first game of the World Cup. They lost 2-1 against Saudi Arabia – but after that, the Argentines were flawless. They won 2-0 against Mexico and Poland, then beat Australia 2-1 in the round of the last 16, beat the Netherlands on penalties, and defeated Croatia 3-0 in the semifinals.

Argentina World Cup 2022 Preview

When Argentina lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia on the first matchday, hardly anyone would have bet that the Albiceleste would end up in the World Cup final.

But Argentina became stronger and more stable as the tournament progressed. Lionel Scaloni’s team still had to find its feet in some positions, but it now looks very solid.

The Croatians also had to learn this bitter lesson, as the Argentines left the 2018 World Cup finalists no chance in the semifinals. A key role was taken by superstar Lionel Messi, who excelled with a goal and an assist. Two goals were also scored by young star Julián Álvarez, just 22, who replaced Lautaro Martínez and now has four goals in the tournament.

Argentina’s midfield also looked stronger with each game. In Argentina’s 4-4-2, Enzo Fernández and Leandro Paredes play in the center, with Rodrigo de Paul and Alexis Mac Allister filling the full-back positions. Nevertheless, it is conceivable that Scaloni will change his starting lineup compared to the successful semifinal against Croatia. Marcos Acuña and Gonzalo Montiel return to the squad after their suspensions and are serious options for the full-back positions. Especially the question of who will start at right-back is an important one – the latter will be up against France’s superstar Kylian Mbappé. Since the full-back positions are not necessarily the best-staffed positions in the Argentine squad, they could become a key in this World Cup final.

Another interesting facet is that against both the Netherlands and Croatia, Argentina had less possession than their opponents. Against the Dutch, just a little, but against Croatia, significantly. France World Cup 2022 Preview

France’s performance in the knockout phase of the 2022 World Cup was very solid: probably the most important victory came in the quarterfinals against England. Not only did they knock out one of the favorites for the title, but they also boosted their self-confidence. In comparison, the semifinal against Morocco was a rather easy affair.

The French are basically well-staffed in all positions and there are hardly any weak points. Qualitatively, the starting lineup in particular is superior to that of the Argentines.

However, there is one position where France is practically perfect and that is the “10”. Antoine Griezmann plays in the attacking midfield of the French, who has an enormous range of movement and action and is extremely important for the team.

The defensive midfield is a bit weaker with Rabiot and Tchouameni than in the last World Cup in 2018, when Kanté and Pogba (both injured this year) played in this space. That’s why it’s very important for France to have Griezmann as an extra aid on the central axis – even when it comes to condensing the center.

The French offensive line is fantastically well-staffed anyway: Kylian Mbappé is currently one of the world’s best players, Ousmane Dembélé on the right offensive side is always good for a surprise and Olivier Giroud has also been reliable in the tournament so far.

The encounter against Morocco showed a different side of the French. After an early goal by Theo Hernández, the “Equipe tricolore” pulled back and let the Moroccans take over the game. This gave Morocco good opportunities again and again, but France was able to save energy and shift to counterattacking.

If the French also take the lead in the final against Argentina, we could see the same approach again. Unlike four years ago, when France was very dominant and always went for the second goal quickly, this time they could opt for pragmatism.

With players like Mbappé or Dembélé, France can transition perfectly and is probably more dangerous that way than if they permanently control the game and push the opponent backwards – as the Spaniards did in this tournament, for example.

The dream of the World Cup final is over for the Moroccans. France was a size too large and although they had good opportunities, the French were cleverer in the end.

It was a tough semi-final for the Moroccans because France took the lead in the first few minutes of the game and then backed off. France must be warned ahead of their semi-final clash with Morocco – in two respects! On the one hand, the Moroccans put in a remarkable performance and have already knocked out three World Cup favorites – Belgium, Spain and Portugal. On the other hand, their own game against England demonstrated how quickly things can unfold in football: Giroud provided the 2-1 for the French and Harry Kane missed a penalty shortly afterwards, putting France up after 90 minutes.

In the quarter-final duel with England, it was again quite quickly obvious why the French are so strong at the moment and are now the sole favorites for the title. The density of the midfield, thanks to the hard-working Antoine Griezmann who keeps dropping back, is an absolute key to success. This time, however, it will be much more difficult for the Moroccans than in the previous games. Croatia were already severely challenged at the group stage. Against Belgium and also against the surprise team from Morocco, they both drew 0-0. This was also the reason why Belgium had to go home early.

While they failed to put in a commanding performance against Japan in the round of 16, Zlatko Dalic’s team managed to surprise against Brazil. With the exception of the slip-up in the last group game against Tunisia, France have played a convincing World Cup so far and have lived up to their reputation as the new title co-favorites. Kylian Mbappé, in particular, has been inspiring once again and has already scored five goals, making him the current top scorer at the 2022 World Cup.

But Mbappé’s colleagues in the offense are also playing a great tournament so far. Olivier Giroud has already scored three goals in the tournament and Ousmane Dembélé is always good for surprising moments.

The most important offensive player next to Mbappé, however, is the experienced Antoine Griezmann, who traditionally plays strongly in tournaments and puts himself one hundred percent at the service of the team. The high level of defensive work Griezmann does also makes the French midfield center and defense stronger.

Morocco World Cup 2022 Preview

Morocco did not reach the quarter-finals by a chain of fortunate circumstances, but were completely convincing in the course of the tournament. Already in the group stage, coach Walid Regragui’s team showed that they can implement their tight, tactical concept well. As a result, the Moroccans have only conceded one goal in the course of the World Cup so far.

Against Spain, Morocco delivered a tactical masterpiece. Despite having about three quarters of possession, the Spanish were only able to generate 1.01 Expected Goals. Morocco closed off the crucial areas to such an extent that the Spanish hardly had any clear scoring opportunities. On the contrary, Morocco actually had the better scoring chances in some phases of the game and could well have taken the lead even in regular playing time.

Having seen over the course of the 90 minutes that they could crack the possession-oriented Spaniards in this way, they pulled way back in extra time and practically concentrated only on defensive work. This inactivity on the offensive is also clearly visible in the following graphs on the game.

In the end, a penalty shootout had to decide whether the team would advance or be eliminated. Here, the Moroccans kept a cool head and goalkeeper Bono saved two of Spain’s three penalties. Pablo Sarabia also hit the post and Morocco advanced to the quarter-finals with an impressive 3-0 win on penalties.

There, however, the strong Portuguese team now awaits  against whom it will be more difficult to defend. Compared with Spain, Portugal is much more flexible on the attack and offers more dynamic and explosive play than the Spaniards.

Morocco will of course again focus primarily on defensive duties, but will also try to convert one of the dangerous counterattacks into a goal against Portugal.

However, Morocco may have personnel problems: Romain Saiss, who has been a very confident defender so far, had to deal with problems in his thigh against Spain in extra time. He continued to play and was not substituted, but there will be a thorough medical check before the match against Portugal to see if he is ready for the game. Nayef Aguerd, meanwhile, is likely to be out for the time being.

Portugal World Cup 2022 Preview

The Portuguese national team showed how quickly things can go in a completely different direction at a World Cup when it defeated Switzerland 6-1 in the round of the last 16. It was only in the final game that Portugal lost 2-1 to South Korea and earned criticism for it. However, the reaction of the European “Selecao” was impressive.

Cristiano Ronaldo was benched by his coach Fernando Santos – a situation of great rarity in the Portuguese team. Instead, Goncalo Ramos, a 21-year-old from Benfica Lisbon, stepped up and promptly introduced himself with three goals.

But other players were also convincing and even two defenders, Pepe and Raphael Guerreiro, scored. Substitute Rafael Leao provided the final touch with a goal worth seeing, completing a true celebration for Portugal.

However, if you look at the expected goals, you can see that the victory was too high: 2.28 : 1.22 was the final score, which means that six goals were clearly too many. In the end, Switzerland failed not so much because of themselves, but more because of the great efficiency of the Portuguese.

One difference to the upcoming match against Morocco will be that the Swiss tried to act offensively and “play along” with the Portuguese. This will be different against Morocco, as the North Africans will be very defensive and will mostly stand deep and wait for counterattacks.

For Portugal, Nuno Mendes and Danilo Pereira will continue to be absent. The two PSG players will not be able to take part in any more World Cup matches.

No less than five Portugal players would be suspended in the event of a yellow card in the semifinals: Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Neves, Joao Felix, Ruben Dias, as well as the injured Pereira are at risk. It is also clear after the great game against Switzerland that the powerful Goncalo Ramos will also start against Morocco. Croatia World Cup Quarterfinals Preview

Croatia is a team that does very well in tournaments – Zlatko Dalic’s squad proved that quite impressively recently. Of the last eleven World Cup matches, Croatia lost only one. However, that was the 2018 World Cup final against France.

They qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup in a minimalistic manner, however. Out of four games, no less than three ended in a draw – only Canada has been defeated after regular time so far. It was also the only game in which Croatia performed in a very balanced manner and was consistently convincing.

In the round of 16 against Japan, Croatia had to go all the way to the penalty shootout, where goalkeeper Livakovic was the hero with three penalties saved. Here, the Croats proved once again that they have nerves of steel and are absolutely up to the pressure of a World Cup.

However, Croatia did not perform particularly well against Japan, finding few solutions on the offensive against deep-lying Japanese. This could already be observed against Morocco. Croatia had an easier time in the World Cup so far when they didn’t have to control the game. The central midfield of the Croats is very well staffed with Modric, Brozovic and Kovacic, but there is a lack of players up front.

Against Brazil, however, Croatia will tend to take the more defensive role anyway. The Croats will leave the ball and the game to the South Americans, withdraw and try to counterattack. A lot of work will also be put into Croatia’s defense, which has already proven that it is in excellent shape. The combination of the experienced Dejan Lovren and young star Josko Gvardiol is particularly strong in central defense. This is one of the reasons why the Croatians have conceded only two goals so far and they will certainly not make it easy for the Brazilians.

Borna Sosa should return to the team after an illness, but Josip Stanisic, an attacking player, is questionable.

Brazil World Cup Quarterfinals Preview

Brazil showed against South Korea why they the bookmakers consider them the World Cup favorites. Brazil already led 4-0 at halftime thanks to goals from Vinicius junior, Neymar, Richarlison and Lucas Paquetá. The Netherlands have not yet been able to really convince at the tournament so far. In the group stage, they struggled to overcome Senegal, played weakly in the 1-1 draw against Ecuador and finally defeated Qatar without a shine.

In the round of 16, the Dutch scored three goals for the first time, but the opponent from the United States had great opportunities to even turn the game, although “Oranje” was already 2-0 ahead at the break after goals from Memphis Depay and Daley Blind.

Denzel Dumfries scored the decisive 3:1 five minutes after Haji Wright’s USA goal, which earned him a kiss from his coach Louis van Gaal at the press conference.

The way the Netherlands performed against the USA was not “Dutch” at all. Normally the country is known for fast, dynamic attacking soccer, but this time they took an early lead and then surrendered the initiative to the USA. Argentina quickly bounced back from a 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia on the first matchday of the group stage and remained flawless thereafter. Three wins from their last three games speak for themselves, and they put in a very strong performance against the Poles in particular.

However, the team around its superstar Lionel Messi has still not shown itself to be playing like truly world champions. This is mainly due to the lack of efficiency in the offensive, which was particularly visible in the final phase of the round of 16 match against Australia.

Portugal performed well at the start of the tournament and there are some promising aspects to the European “Selecao”, but Fernando Santos’ team also has its problems.

Spain World Cup 2022 Preview

After the first match against Costa Rica, Spain already looked like a hot favorite for the World Cup title. However, the glory faded relatively quickly and the “Furia Roja” only picked up one point from the remaining two games.

They were largely the better team against Germany, but failed to stay cool enough on the attack. Again and again, the Spaniards overcomplicated things and ended up with a 1-1 draw. The same thing happened in the game against Japan, where the Spaniards had almost 84% possession but created far too few chances.
