The Senegalese have already received their worst news shortly before the tournament: Superstar Sadio Mané is absent due to injury and so coach Aliou Cissé had to change his successful team at the most crucial point. But at the same time, the Copa America winners completely lacked physical presence, which is why the underdog’s defense was practically impossible to break down. Even in the closing stages and in the 14 minutes of injury time, Argentina created far too few clear-cut scoring chances.

Group favorites with their backs to the wall

Advancing from Group C will thus be a tricky affair for the Argentines. After the 2-1 loss against Saudi Arabia, they cannot afford to lose any more points. So, it should be obvious that they need two wins against Mexico on November the 26th and against Poland on November the 30th if they want to qualify for the round of 16.

Of course, Argentina’s individual class is great enough to achieve this, and the “Gauchos” are unlikely to put up such an uninspiring performance as they did against Saudi Arabia. The Argentines don’t need to look at the results of the other games – they just need to look after themselves and get the two wins they need.

Not enough to win the title

However, the performance against Saudi Arabia also showed that Argentina can probably be removed from the list of favorites to win the World Cup. Even if Argentina makes it through the group, they would face an opponent like France or Denmark in the round of 16, which are significantly stronger teams than they have to face in their group.

Who will advance to the 2022 World Cup Round of 16?

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will feature 32 teams drawn into eight different groups. There are four teams in each of the groups, of which the top two will advance to the round of 16.

But what happens if two or more teams are level on points in the table after the last group match?

In this case, first the goal difference and then the number of goals scored will decide. Only if these are also equal will the direct duels be considered and after that the goal difference and the number of goals scored in the direct duels.

If this also does not lead to a decision, the team with the higher fair play points will be promoted. The last option left is to draw lots.

In summary, the decisive factor for advancing to the round of 16 is the following:

Now it has become official that Kimpembe will not be able to take part in the tournament because of these persistent problems. Instead of him, 24-year-old Alex Disasi from AS Monaco has been nominated.

Deschamps must change his defense

France’s defense will therefore look different at the tournament than one might have assumed recently. If you look at the UEFA Nations League match against Denmark, you can see that the French team boss has already had to experiment in the past.

In that match, the three-man backline consisted of Saliba, Badiashile and Upamecano.

It was a constellation that ultimately did not work out: France lost 2-0 in Copenhagen, a situation they want to avoid in the rematch of the clash with Denmark on November the 26th.

Seven defenders, but no real stars

The French squad now has a total of seven centre backs to meet the complex requirements of a three-man backline. As already mentioned, Varane and Koundé are not yet at their best.

With Saliba, Upamecano and Konaté, they have three players with great potential, but who have probably not yet been able to prove themselves at the highest level.

Add to that Lucas Hernández from Bayern Munich, who could now step into a key role, and the post-nominated Disasi. Badiashile, who played as a centre back against Denmark, did not make the World Cup squad.

The group should be easy, after that it becomes difficult

In a group with the big underdogs Australia and Tunisia, France’s advancement to the round of 16 should be basically sealed. Only Denmark is a real test on the way to the last 16.

However, the first big challenge could already be waiting in the round of 16: Argentina would be a possible opponent for France, for example, if they would only finish second behind Denmark and Argentina would win Group C.
